When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a key Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
