Pat Bamford Joins Sheffield United Despite Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford has joined the Championship side just half a year after instigating insulting taunts directed at their manager, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, without a club since leaving Leeds United, has agreed to a deal joining the Championship club in difficulty through the winter. Bamford's lengthy time at Elland Road was ended amicably in August.
One of Bamford’s final notable acts while at Leeds involved leading abusive songs about Chris Wilder during the club’s success festivities in April. Currently, the former England international is set to play under Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to pull the team he loves out of the bottom places.
Past Conflict Involving Bamford and the Manager
The pair had a past prior to Leeds won promotion back to the top flight last season and United were defeated in the promotion decider to Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as “a muppet” back when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and the Blades won direct promotion while Leeds United missed out in the playoffs.
Making Amends & Looking Ahead
All seems to have been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the league's lowest scorers, urgently requiring of improvement up front and Bamford aiming to revive his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely this spring. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, called Wilder the next day.
Wilder stated at the time: “Spoke with Pat yesterday and I have no problem at all with it. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow pro! But I appreciated and respected him calling me.
“We spent a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel as well and we had a longer discussion with him and he's a super guy, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and accept it and that’s part and parcel of the game at every level, including Sunday league. I've got no problem at all. I am cool with it and I told him that to Pat.”
Recent Career Struggles
The forward made 18 games with Leeds United in the previous campaign however the former Nottingham Forest, Chelsea & Middlesbrough striker has faced difficulties with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
