The daughter of former South African Leader Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43, is being charged over statements she published on digital networks in the past during deadly unrest in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her father.

A period of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including theft and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 deceased and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this turmoil and confronts charges of provocation to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

Context of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the former president's apprehension for ignoring a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into accusations of graft while he was serving as president.

The defendant has always denied the accusations against her, with her attorney in the past describing the government's legal argument as weak.

She has also consistently claimed the allegations against her were an attempt to resolve political disputes with her parent after he started his own party and ran against the African National Congress.

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and kinship targeting" against the former president and his relatives.

A handful of followers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other organization officials participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is insufficient and lacks compelling evidence for a conviction.
