Flight Delays in the US Expected to Intensify, Transportation Chief Warns
American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.
"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.
After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.
But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays caused by climate and other issues.
More than three thousand US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.
"I observe the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns directly.
"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.
The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown began.
The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in history.
He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.
In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.
"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official said.
On Sunday, some planes were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
