Arnaud Kalimuendo Fires as Forest Secure Nostalgic Triumph Against Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out through the stadium as Forest fans celebrated another success against Malmö. A great deal has transpired since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the European Cup in 1979, but the club still hold dear those memories. Equally, significant shifts have occurred in the five weeks since the manager took charge, with Forest appearing refreshed and securing a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of advancing in the Europa League.

Gaining Steam with Third Consecutive Win

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their home competition – marked a third straight win across all competitions and further built on the positive energy gained from the previous week's success at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's historic triumph in name, the game itself was free of any significant tension or nerves.

It proved to be an occasion filled with nostalgia, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the showpiece event over four decades past.

The home side fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by providing them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s squad from then were also in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a dinner together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and company were given a tumultuous welcome when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically impressive display was shown in the Trent End.

Recalling History

“May 30, 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed half of a large tifo, in block capitals. While nobody required a reminder of what happened next, the rest was revealed as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. Another stunning tifo depicted Clough watching events beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Outset

So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful memories, but what about the performance on the night? It was pretty good, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward whistled an effort off target inside the opening moments and built a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the visitors' defense captained by their own academy product skipper, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a defender and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his first goal since last March.

Another Strike Confirms Control

The scorer was implicated in the team's second goal on the verge of the interval, too, his free header parried by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and only his second appearance since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.

A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was turned wide off Malmö back Colin Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free the defender had earlier had a powerful header smartly saved by the keeper, who was back in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league ended on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal Forest’s intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a set-piece. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

Forest then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, implemented seven changes from the team that surprised the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also scored three times, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the final period.

Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team

It turned out to be a flawless night for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could take off the defender with the game already boxed off and subsequently introduced 19-year-old full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the club legends supplying “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad showed they are able of producing of excitement, as well.
