A Devastating Shift Only 12 Months Has Caused in the United States
In late October 2024, the situation was utterly distinct. Ahead of the American presidential vote, reflective residents could admit the nation's deep flaws – its unfairness and imbalance – however they continued to identify it as the United States. A free society. A land where legal governance carried weight. A nation guided by a dignified and upright leader, notwithstanding his older age and increasing frailty.
Currently, as October 2025 ends, many of us barely recognize the nation we live in. People alleged as undocumented migrants are rounded up and pushed into vehicles, occasionally denied due process. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed to build a lavish ballroom. Donald Trump is targeting his adversaries or perceived antagonists and demanding the justice department surrender a massive sum of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are dispatched to US urban areas on false pretexts. The Pentagon, renamed the Department of War, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends potentially totaling close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Institutions, law firms, media outlets are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are handled as nobility.
“The United States, just months before its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the edge toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” a noted author, commented recently. “Finally, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost our nation is, and how quickly it unfolded.
However, it is known that the leader was legitimately chosen. Following his deeply disturbing initial presidency and despite the alerts linked to the awareness of the rightwing blueprint – despite Trump himself declared plainly he intended to rule as a tyrant just on day one – enough Americans elected him over the other candidate.
As terrifying as today's circumstances may be, it’s even scarier to understand that we’re only nine months into this presidential term. What will an additional three years of this deterioration leave us? And suppose the three years becomes something even longer, because there is not anyone to restrain this leader from deciding that a third term is required, maybe for security concerns?
Admittedly, there is still hope. There are congressional elections the coming year that may establish an alternate balance of power, in case Democrats retake one or both houses of parliament. We have government representatives who are trying to apply some accountability, like Democratic congressmen who are initiating an inquiry concerning the try to money grab from the justice department.
And a national vote in 2028 could start the path to healing exactly as last year’s election placed us on this regrettable path.
There are countless citizens demonstrating in public spaces throughout communities, similar to recent recently at democracy demonstrations.
A former official, commented this week that “the slumbering force of America is awakening”, just as it did post-McCarthyism during the fifties or throughout the Vietnam war protests or throughout the Nixon controversy.
On those occasions, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.
He claims he understands the signs of that awakening and sees it happening at present. As evidence, he points to the recent massive protests, the extensive, cross-party resistance against a television host's removal and the largely united refusal by journalists to sign the defense department’s demands they only publish what is sanctioned.
“The slumbering entity perpetually exists dormant before certain corruption grows too toxic, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, certain violence so disruptive, that it is forced other than to stir.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.
Meanwhile, the major inquiries endure: can America regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status internationally and its devotion to the rule of law?
Or do we need to admit that the historical project worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My negative thoughts tells me that the latter is correct; that everything could be finished. My positive feelings, though, advises me that we need to strive, in whatever ways available.
Personally, working in journalism analysis, that’s about encouraging reporters to adhere, more thoroughly, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it may be engaging with political races, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to protect electoral access.
Under twelve months back, we existed in a separate situation. A year from now? Or in several years? The fact is, we cannot predict. All we can do is try to not give up.
